ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
WELCOME
Welcome to the LGBTQ+ Positive Voices Online Exhibition. This is a celebration of LGBTQ+ people’s positive experiences, lives and perspectives. It’s partly inspired by my experience of visiting LGBTQ+ exhibitions (including the Museum of Transology, and The Transworkers Photography Exhibition), and seeing others like me represented in them. At the same time, some of the personal stories shared alongside items within these exhibitions made me feel as if I had a positive future as a trans/gender non-conforming bisexual person. The LGBTQ+ Positive Voices online exhibition is a space that enables others to celebrate their own stories, and is also a space that allows visitors to experience creative works that are a positive reflection of being an LGBTQ+ person. 💗
THE CREATORS
When I sent out the call for submissions, I had a fantastic response. Each time I opened my email to find another contribution I was excited. And discovering the unique short personal story behind each creative piece was moving, thought-provoking, and they made me smile and also made me emotional too. The range of creative pieces and artworks that have been submitted are wonderful. The exhibition includes videos, dance performance pieces, paintings, digital artworks, audio pieces and games, representing a broad spectrum of sexual and gender identities from 26 artists and creative contributors from around the world. Each exhibition page includes those personal stories in the creator's words alongside the exhibition piece. I want to say a massive thank you to everyone who contributed - everyone who was willing to share their personal experiences openly in this way. And I'm so pleased to be able to include all of their inspirational positive voices in this exhibition. 💞
The creators are:
ARE YOU HERE?
These pieces represent perspectives of the LGBTQ+ community, but not all of it. They are everyday voices, and experiences unique to the individuals that have shared them. You may see aspects of yourself reflected back in them. You may not. If you don't, that is genuinely okay. It doesn't make you any less a part of the LGBTQ+ community. Everyone is different, and we all have different stories and experiences that make us "Us". It's okay to be the LGBTQ+ person you are, regardless. 💖
SUPPORT
I understand that life is not necessarily all sunshine and kittens for LGBTQ+ people, which is partly why I wanted to create this exhibition. I also realise that the exhibition may generate difficult feelings for different people. I have added links to professional support and well-being organisations to this page who can help if you have been affected by any of the content within this exhibition. 💓
THANKS
As well as the contributors, I also wanted to thank everyone who has helped move this project forward. That includes anyone who has spread the word about the exhibition, or has been in touch with words of support. I specifically want to mention the Create Place programme, where I received so much encouragement and had many useful discussions that helped focus my idea. Thanks to Carola Boehm (programme leader), partner organisations and tutors, fellow programme participants, and mentor Nicola Winstanley from Voluntary Arts who helped give my jumble of ideas direction. I also "borrowed" the name of the exhibition from Nicola. I also want to thank family & friends - without their support I wouldn't have come out & wouldn't have created this exhibition. 💕
And thank you too for visiting the exhibition. Enjoy discovering the personal stories and celebrations within it. Feel free to share your positive thoughts via the Comments Book.
