Take it to the Bridge
Ash Green
Pronouns: They/them
I love the pop music of my childhood and early teens (the late 1970's / early 1980's). And it was a time when the phrase gender-bender was used in reference to a few pop stars of the era - such as Pete Burns, Sylvester, Annie Lennox and Marilyn. I don't know if it's a phrase they agreed with in terms of themselves. But the main thing was they didn't play up to expected gendered presentation norms and cues. I didn't really understand what that middle ground of gender was when I was a teen. It confused me, and sometimes made me feel uncomfortable. But as I got older, seeing how they occupied that middle space made more sense to me. I'm honestly still not sure where I fit in terms of gender "stuff" and if I'm "trans enough". But if I take the labels away, I know that when I think about those pop stars, it feels fine and natural to be in a similar space in regard to my own gender wiggles and wobbles.
